Poet’s Note: A big thank you to my friend Kritika for the title idea!
I tell everyone a lie,
That I don’t care about looks.
I motivate others, I lead them to believe
That the only thing important is inside.
And it’s true, I do know.
I make an effort to let that show,
When I’m hurting inside, trying to avoid the mirror
When I show up in lipstick just for dinner.
I know, I know, I know what’s right.
But it doesn’t help push that feeling down.
When you see someone else’s smile is prettier,
She’s wearing that perfect invisible crown.
I shouldn’t let it get to me,
Yet it does.
When I find a million faults in myself,
How can I heal another?
They’re all impressed by someone else,
Not even shooting a glance my way.
I get it, how can you see a tiny crystal of sugar
When there’s a beautiful cake in the way?
It’s not just me who’s lying.
It’s done by everyone, every day
They say you’re heart is what matters.
But in the end, they only see your face.
