Poet’s Note: These 6 lines were the first “poem” I ever wrote, when I was seven years old and had just fallen in love with literacy. I remember how proud I was – holding out the scribbled piece of paper in front of my parents and smiling a toothy smile. Written in 2014!

If I had a pet, it would be great.
I would give it food in a plate.
It would be a dog.
No, a cat.
I don’t know!
But it won’t be a rat.
